Pitkin Alert Action Required
Hello - Thank you for your participation in our Pitkin Alert notification system. I'm writing today to ask you to take a few minutes to update your account (at pitkinalert.org) before the end of this month, as our current 'Alert Subscription' categories will expire on October 1st. If you do not subscribe to the new categories, you will not receive alerts after Oct. 1st!
Pro Tips and Considerations
- · If you previously received an email from me, or you are receiving multiple errors when you try to login, you will need to set up a new account. Ignore all the login information and just click the 'Sign Up' link at the top of the page. Usernames are case sensitive and have to be unique, so you may have to tweak your new one (add a number or adjust upper/lower case letters). If you are set on using a particular username, call or email us and we'll remove your old account.
- · For Emergency Alerts, we will send alerts to all contact methods you provide. Community, School and Business Alerts will only be sent via text and email, so don't be afraid to put a 'call' contact on your list for those rare emergencies.
- · Set up your delivery methods from least obtrusive to most (text, email, app…then phone call). Each alert will ask you to confirm receipt – if you confirm, the system will stop trying to reach you. (i.e. If you confirm the text, it will not try to send an email or ring a phone)
- · This system requires you to select two delivery methods. If you only want one, go ahead and set it up with two then contact us to have one removed.
If you run into any problems or have any questions, please call our helpline at 970-429-6183 or email alerthelp@pitkin911.org and we will answer as we are able. The Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center takes great pride in providing all of you timely and accurate information through Pitkin Alert – thank you again for participating and for updating your account.

Affected Area: large portions of western Colorado, including Moffat, Routt, Jackson, Grand, Rio Blanco, Garfield, Eagle, Summit, Mesa, Delta, Pitkin, Gunnison, Lake, Chaffee, Park, Montrose, Ouray, San Miguel, Dolores, San Juan, Montezuma, and La Plata Counties. Locations and points of interest include, but are not limited to Craig, Steamboat Springs, Walden, Hot Sulphur Springs, Meeker, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Eagle, Breckenridge, Grand Junction, Delta, Aspen, Gunnison, Leadville, Salida, Fairplay, Montrose, Ouray, Telluride, Dove Creek, Silverton, Cortez, and Durango.
Advisory in Effect: 8:00 AM MDT, Wednesday, August 15, 2018 to 9:00 AM MDT, Thursday, August 16, 2018.
Public Health Recommendations: If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly. Consider limiting outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present. Consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and is making you ill. If visibility is less than 5 miles in smoke in your neighborhood, smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy.
Outlook: Widespread smoke from several in-state and out-of-state fires is impacting large sections of western Colorado. Periods of moderate to heavy smoke can be expected Wednesday through Thursday morning within the advisory area, especially in areas near local wildfires. The highest impacted areas will include locations near the Bull Draw Fire near the Montrose/Mesa County line, the Cabin Lake Fire in Rio Blanco County, and the Silver Creek Fire near the Routt County/Grand County line. Lake Christine Flash Flood Warning - Basalt
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the Basalt Mountain area. Please take necessary precautions. At 447 PM MDT, Until 745 PM MDT Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain over the Lake Christine Fire. Storms west moving east southwest at 20 mph. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly. Some locations that will experience flooding include... Basalt, Emma and El Jebel and the Lake Christine Burn Scar. Excessive rainfall over the burn scar will result in debris flow moving through the Roaring Fork Drainage. The debris flow can consist of rock, mud, vegetation and other loose materials. This includes Colorado 82 between mile markers 19 and 21. Move away from recently burned areas. Life-threatening flooding of creeks, roads and normally dry areas is likely. Air Quality Health Advisory
There is an air quality health advisory in place due to wildfire smoke from the Lake Christine Fire. Areas along Highway 82 from Basalt to Carbondale and surrounding areas have been impacted. Wildfire smoke may reach unhealthy levels. If visibility is less than 5 miles in your neighborhood, avoid outdoor activity and keep indoor air clean or consider relocating temporarily.
Residents and visitors in the Basalt area can find local real-time air quality readings by viewing the map at www.purpleair.com. This monitor is a snapshot of air quality at a fixed location. Please remember that air quality can change quickly depending on your location, winds, and fire activity. In addition, some people may be more sensitive to smoke in the air, even if the monitor indicates the air quality is good or moderate. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly. Please use good judgement to determine if you should remain indoors.

In the Event of a Power Outage
Though the risk of power loss is diminishing, fire behavior is unpredictable and we are preparing for all possibilities. If power is lost, cell phone towers will go down as well. If you have an emergency during the outage, 1) Call 911 from your cell phone, it may still go through, 2) Call from a landline, most will still work without power, 3) Proceed to the nearest Fire Station and call from the emergency phone.

The Ute Trail is now open. D16
